Via Neotarama… We’re all used to seeing pizzas, but generally only in restaurants and our homes. We may even occasionally see them at pizza farms. But it’s not often that we get to view elusive wild pizzas before they are harvested by hunters. Thankfully, Jonpaul Douglass, a photographer in Los Angeles, gives us a glimpse into this mysterious world through his series Pizza in the Wild. Douglass uses real pizzas, but for this Daily Create, you are welcome to photoshop a pepperoni pizza into an unexpected wild place… Upload your photo to flickr and tag it dailycreate and tdc819

Today is a major US holiday – National Potato Chip Day. Did you know that Americans consume 1.2 billion pounds of potato chips each year? It’s the nation’s favorite snack food! An Irish chef named George Crum invented potato chips in Saratoga Springs in 1853. One day, a picky customer kept sending his fried potatoes back to the kitchen, complaining that they were too thick and soggy. Crum responded by slicing the potatoes so thin that they couldn’t be eaten with a fork. The customer was so pleased with Crum’s crispy creation that they became a regular item on the restaurant’s menu! Break out a bag, munch a few, and make some art out of the rest. Use the Pixel Spreadsheet tools from Think Maths to convert a photo or image into an Excel Spreadsheet– it puts a red, green, blue value in a cell, and zoomed out you can see how that forms a photo. Making one is simple. A monkey can do that. How can you transform the image using Excel tools? For the example above, multiple columns were sorted to make it more “glitch” like. How else might you manipulate the numbers to make something different? Or make it change appearance at different zoom levels. Started in 2012 by ds106 alumni Sara K, it’s an assignment AND a Daily Create! See the previous examples for inspiration/perspiration. I was in Urban Outfitters the other day and stumbled across a postcard pack labeled “Unbridled Passion” by Franco Accornero. It’s a collection of 30 different postcards from an artist who has painted more than 5,000 romance novel covers (as well as westerns, thrillers and sci-fi books). The postcards are really ridiculous on their own, but I thought for this Valentine’s day I would make them even funnier but adding my own captions. That’s where the ds106 Valentine’s Day Caption Challenge for #ds106 comes into play: I challenge you to make your own captions for these postcards! Did you know Art was born more than 1,000,000 years ago? According to The Internetz “Art’s Birthday” is an annual event first proposed in 1963 by French artist Robert Filliou. He suggested that 1,000,000 years ago, there was no art. But one day, on the 17th of January to be precise, Art was born. According to Filliou, it happened when someone dropped a dry sponge into a bucket of water. Modest beginnings, but look at us now. Filliou proposed a public holiday to celebrate the presence of art in our lives. In recent years, the idea has been taken up by a loose network of artists and friends around the world. Each year the Eternal Network evolves to include new partners – working with the ideas of exchange and telecommunications-art. Create a piece of art to celebrate this important day!
