Want to have some fun improving your 3M digital communication & collaboration skills? This is your invitation to join me in creating our first 3M DS106 Salon*. Where we’ll develop our digital presence and learn the power and responsibilities that come with good digital citizenship – more important than ever as our digital lives blur between private, public, and proprietary. The goal isn’t just to learn the technology. It is to do something much larger by using these tools as resources to improve our positive impact and effectiveness inside and outside of 3M. You can participate as much or as little as you like, drop-in, drop-out, drop back in again, as we create and collaborate alongside the 15-week open-online course in digital storytelling, DS106 headquartered out of Mary Washington University, which begins August 26, 2013.

* A salon is a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine the taste and increase the knowledge of the participants through conversation.[Source: Wikipedia and thanks to John Woodward for introducing me to this concept.]

Headless DS106
Why headless?
Because we have too many talking heads, that’s why.
Course Description: Headless DS106 is the brainchild of…wait a minute did I say ‘brain’? This open course begins August 26 w/o a teacher but with many ‘head-endowed’ creators…and, that means “YOU”! and “You”! and ‘you’!-@ whatever creative level you want .
The fun includes readings, viewings, creation ideas based on previous University of Mary Washington classes. Blog, write, tweet, gif, stop motion, photo , video, radio, play, hack, create and connect with a headless community.
We also need volunteers to run this course, so if you’ve got that heady feeling about Headless DS106-you may want to sign up and help. We’re not headhunting here, that’s the truth.
Let’s make heads roll when a dedicated crew of open, online DS106-ers rock the web!

Sure, ds106 is a course where you learn and practice digital storytelling, and yes, that means that you can make animated GIFs, video and audio artifacts, manipulate digital images, and more. Which is pretty great.

But that’s not even the half of it.

What is ds106? It’s a community of people who love to make art and who love to help others make art. It’s a fantastically inviting and supportive community that is ready to help when you’re struggling with technical difficulties and that shares your excitement when you amaze yourself with your own creativity. Which you will.

It’s people who thrive on playing with others, and with what others have created. It’s riffing, it’s back-and-forth conversations with creations. It’s this: http://johnjohnston.info/106/boing/

And this: http://ds-ina.tumblr.com/post/56583527714/frownupsidedown

And this: http://rockylouproductions.com/blog_wp/2013/08/10/worm-daisy-delight/

It’s talking dolls: http://iamtalkytina.com/

and dead mountain men: https://olhatchetjack.wordpress.com/

and oblivious doctors: http://ds106.us/2012/12/29/dr-oblivion-welcomes-you-to-ds106/

It’s also the headless ds106 itself—the community both runs it and participates. As Jim Groom says, that’s kind of how it often works as an open online course anyway: http://bavatuesdays.com/ds106-acephalous-a-headless-online-community-that-is-4life/

But mostly, it’s just really damn fun. And addictive. And it makes you stay up all night telling stories: http://followersoftheapocalyp.se/were-up-all-night-to-tell-stories-ds106/

What’s the difference between mp3 and m3p? How about GIF vs GIMP? Can you animate still images or make still images from movies? Beyond the technology, can you tell a story?

Design, audio, video, images…it’s all part of the headless ds106 Digital Storytelling class. Presented out of the ds106.us headquarters, this course follows in a series of credit classes that included open online participation. Now, a section for open online participants only. The University of Mary Washington’s Division of Teaching and Learning Technology is leading on the bleeding edge of the open education movement. Now, you (whoever you are) can learn from the masters, learn from the beginners, and learn from everyone inbetween. And, they will learn from you!

No obligation, no grades, no required assignments. There is no teacher; we determine our own path and guide each other. However, there is as much work and learning as you could desire. Keep a beginner’s mind, ask questions, try things, make art!

When the student is ready, headless ds106 is there.
