What is that sound? It’s so eerie, loud and with a long whine. It stops, things become quiet once again and I think it’s safe to go back to sleep. There it is again! Why won’t it stop? Like something is in great pain. Quiet yet again. Maybe it’s left. Maybe it really is safe to go back to sleep. Not again! That horrid sound has entered my subconscious. I’m not sure if I still hear it or I just think I do. Finally, I get up the courage to get up and see what it could be. Just once, I wish this darn cat would be patient for her breakfast!
I woke with a start, a bit unsettled as I tried to look around the dark room. As usual, I wasn’t sure whether it was the sound coming from my phone’s alarm or its vibration that woke me. I lay back down, gathering myself for the day ahead, as feeling of uneasiness crept over me. Something was amiss. Silence. There was none of the usual morning noises that normally accompanied the break of dawn. I sat up again and rubbed my eyes before once again peering around the room. I could see nothing out of place, yet the feeling persisted.
It’s a dark, stormy morning and all I want to do is roll over and play dead. But there’s a heavy weight on my chest — literally. I struggle to crawl out from under the warm, furry lump that has flattened itself across my body and refuses to move.
The morning began as almost any other. The clear sky, darkness giving way to yellow, red, and blue. The sun and moon rising in the east, the other moon setting in the west. The fields were fertile and our colony was prospering.
Then, the buzzing underground began.
The grey, hazy fog hung low in the air. What’s happening? I can’t see straight. Shouldn’t have had so much wine last night… Somehow, I manage to stumble to the refrigerator and pull out the turkey bacon. Quietly, carefully, placing each slice onto the baking sheet. Fresh ground black pepper on all of those delicious slices, that’s the ticket. The oven, wait! Is it pre-heated yet? It’s okay, we can still make it happen- just have to focus, get your head in the game, kid. Crank that oven to 400 degrees, really make it sweat. Stick that turkey bacon in the oven, set the timer for about 8 minutes. Quietly pad around the house, check Facebook, is there time?? There’s time. 8 minutes is up- but the turkey bacon needs to go a minute or two more. Quick, reset the timer for another minute, but stay right by the stove- you don’t want to burn two pans of turkey bacon… Watch it, wait for it. It’s finally done, hear the sizzle. Pad it all down with some paper towels, and then grab four slices for this morning. The rest will be wrapped up to eat during the week. The morning was a bacon roller coaster ride of mystery and intrigue.
